If you are an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or eligible NZ citizen you may be able to sponsor your parents to live, work and study in Australia.

The following criteria must be met for a parent visa:

  1. Your parents must meet the balance of family test namely have at least half of their children living in Australian permanently.  
  2. The sponsoring child must be settled in Australia
  3. Your parents must meet heath and character requirements
  4. Assurance of Support must be provided when requested by the Department

Parent visa migration program:

You may consider sponsoring your parents on a permanent parent visa, which is capped and queued, with processing time taking up to 30 years (outlined below)

  • Parent Visa (subclass 103): applicant can be in/out Australia when application is lodged but must be outside Australia when the application is decided.
  • Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804): applicant must be in Australia when application is lodged and when it is decided. The applicant must also be at least 65 years of age and 6 months at time of application.

Contributory parent visa program:

You may also consider sponsoring your parents on a Contributory Parent visa, which offers a much shorter processing time. Applicants can apply for permanent visa straight away or to split the costs, applicants can apply for temporary visa first (valid for 2 years) and then apply for permanent visa before the expiry of the temporary visa

The main contributory parent visas are outlined below:

  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 173): applicant can be in/out Australia when application is lodged but must be outside Australia when application is decided.
  • Contributory Parent (Permanent) Visa (subclass 143): applicant can be in/out Australia when application is lodged and must be outside Australia when the application is decided unless the applicant holds a certain type of visa.
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 884): The applicant must be at least 65 years of age and 6 months at time of application and in Australia when application is lodged and when it is decided.
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Permanent) Visa (subclass 864): applicant must be at least 65 years of age and 6 months at time of application and in Australia when application is lodged and when it is decided.
